About Cognitive Behavioural Therapy & Counselling

CBT works on the understanding that the thoughts that we have, coupled with the things that we do, directly affect how we feel.

What is

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?

We look at our thinking, perceptions, and interpretations to see if there are changes that can be made to help us to feel better. We also look at our behaviours -  the things we do and the things we don’t do to see how helpful these are and what we can do to change these. CBT is a solution-focused therapy,  often getting long-lasting results in a short space of time.

In the first instance, we spend some time making sense of things together - this process is called formulating. From here we are able to have a shared understanding of how things fit together, what's keeping the problem going, and where we need to make changes.

What is

Counselling?

Counselling is different from CBT in that it is often described as being more client-led. It offers the space to offload, process, and make sense of things in a non-judgemental environment.  There are some issues that counselling is very helpful and more appropriate for such as bereavement and certain relationship issues. Counselling is often an exploratory process, where the therapist's role is to walk alongside the client, enabling them to find the path that feels right for them.
