What is BABCP Accreditation?

Accreditation means that a CBT psychotherapist has training in a core mental health profession, as well as specific CBT training. For members to become accredited, they must have applied and demonstrated that they meet the high standards of training and experience set out by the BABCP.

Members are committed to maintaining high standards of clinical practice, clinical supervision, and continuing professional development. Accredited members are audited to ensure that they continue to meet these expectations.

Training Standards

To achieve accreditation, members are first trained within a 'Core Profession' within the mental health field or by the process of evidencing equivalent training. A few examples of Core Professions are; Accredited Counsellor, Registered Mental Health Nurse, Health Psychologist, or Clinical Psychologist.

Members then undergo CBT-specific training which incorporates an NHS work placement. This takes place at University on a post-graduate course that meets the BABCP's Minimum Training Standards.

Clinical Practice

A key part of accreditation is clinical practice. Members are required to be an active and practicing CBT Therapists for a minimum of two years following the completion of CBT training.

BABCP accredited members usually have 4-5 years of training in a Core Profession and 3 years of CBT training & clinical practice before receiving full accreditation.
